JULY 9 - Birds, By the River, and Vittles

Monday morning hit me hard. First of all, from now on I'm going to have a pail of water near my bedroom window, to throw at the next people who stand in the street  and yell at each other before 5 AM . I know my window is almost hidden by beautiful trees, but I think some water would reach the idiots. After a sleepless night, I wasn't in the mood to offer them comfort or counselling.

I became a bit more alert when the clock radio blasted at 5:30, and managed to keep awake until my cell phone beeped at 5:40, then I stumbled downstairs to turn on the coffee and continue my day.

  • Breakfast - check. Unlike yesterday, when I burned 4 slices of toast for Tanner before I got 2 that were edible. Blame the stupid toaster.
  • Clothes - check. Although I shouldn't have picked the skirt that gets tighter as the day progresses.
  • Keys, Phone, Bus Fare - check.
  • Take out the Garbage - check.
  • Take the Garbage back in - (uncheck?) It's MONDAY,  not garbage day. Garbage day is Tuesday.
Sigh. Oh well, a nice treat on the bus - my Eagle was back in his tree. And not only did I see him in the morning, I saw him and his eagle friend in the evening on my way home. I felt double blessed.

My day was spent basically clock-watching, as  I was so tired and droopy eyed. I am surprised the cash balanced at the end of the day, but as usual, it did quite nicely.

During my lunch, I walked up to the waterfront, to get a bit of a breeze and a shot of Vitamin D.
My favourite Fish 'n Chip place, Pajo's at the Wharf. The take-out is on a floating jetty, and you can sit there on the water and have your picnic. It's nice when there's a bit of a wave motion, unless of course you are prone to sea-sickness. If you are, let me know, and I'll come with you and eat your fish so it doesn't get wasted.
It's always a treat to see a swan. I have seen two at times - however I haven't been up this way in ages, so I don't know how many there would be on a good day.
This is a new sculpture, I think it's amazing, not like the stupid art installations that are supposed to decorate other parts of the city. This one is perfect for Steveston.

Remember these from the Olympic days?
UGLY
 NOT QUITE AS UGLY

The floating pier where fisher people sell their daily catches right from their boats.
A restaurant built over the water.
And this explains why BC cod doesn't taste like North Atlantic Cod. I do remember jigging up cod 'back home' and they certainly didn't look like this, either in colour or expression. I sure hope Howard is enjoying a good meal of fresh cod while he's 'back home.' I had noodles for dinner.

You may notice me referring to Newfoundland as 'back home.' Because it is. Steve was a bit confused when we were discussing his father's cell phone coverage when he went  - you got it, 'back home.'

Me: I don't think Dad will be able to call us when he's 'back home.'
Steve: What do you mean?
Me: Well, he doesn't have a long-distance plan.
Steve: And he needs a long-distance plan to call home?
Me: No, silly. Of course not. But he would need one to call back home.
Steve: So if he's at work, he can't call home.
Me: What? Sure he can. But when he's back home, he won't be able to call home.

Well, you get the drift. I think Steve was ready to bring me to a nursing home. So I had to explain to my citified boy the difference between home (the nice house in Surrey) and back home (the far away place in our hearts.) He gets it now.

Now, even though I know for sure positively maybe that Howard is back home eating yummy stuff like Fresh Fish (cod, that is), Partridgeberry Tarts, Moose (maybe,) and Bakeapple Something (quite possibly), I still can enjoy my food here. Hardly.

Here is my amazing lunch. I would never recommend a Subway sandwich, but this one is tops. It's the newest member of their family, a Barbecue Pulled Pork Sandwich. This one is on Parmesan Oregano (I almost asked for Parmesan Origami, but I didn't) with lettuce, tomato and onion, salt and pepper, and BBQ sauce. So yummy. And a Yogurt/Fruit Parfait for dessert. With a Cranberry Juice.
Now, dinner. After I got home, I put on a pot of Pea Soup, and then made some stir-fried veggies and Chow Mein noodles with Soy Sauce. Double yummy. The plate is now empty, and I would take the rest of it to work tomorrow for lunch if the microwave there hadn't blown up. Alas.

So, because a woman's work is never done, I must go water my plants, do my dishes, get my coffee ready for the morrow ... and yes, take out the bloody garbage.

JULY 8 - Schooner, Flowers and Cupcakes

I had a very quiet commute in to work this morning, as there were very few people traveling to Richmond. Probably the luckiest were either going to the beach, or were in Newfoundland for the launch of the Leah Caroline, my father-in-law's newest 44' schooner.

Built with his own hands, the wooden boat is a piece of history that was brought to life from a dream, and may indeed be the last schooner to slip into the waters of Trinity Bay. Watch and treasure the moment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e16_GR9Xm4g

One of my fellow passengers inspired me to write this little poem, and I share it with you (and beg forgiveness from Robert Frost, although I don't think he would actually care.)

Whose clothes these are I do not know
They can't belong to her, although
They cover most of her, they're Lycra
But she's a macro and they're micro.

She gives her butt a great big shake
And hauls them up - for goodness sake,
I wait to hear a roaring rip
But no, they settle round her hip.

And then a yank because her tee
Shows more than people need to see
And so I'll end with some advice
Hung on the rack it may look nice

But if like sausage skin it fits
It's better if you don't buy it.

Yup, summer's finally hit the lower mainland. If I needed proof, I got it today, stuck in a hot store while everyone else was walking around outdoors. I myself took a little stroll on my lunch break, and realized that now you actually have to look before you jay walk across the street, as there possibly could be cars coming or going.

I decided to visit one of my favourite Steveston spots
Prickly Pear garden centre. Inside and out, this is a place of beauty.
Walking through the side garden is Serenity. Beautiful plants, wonderful yard sculptures, fountains,
flowers, shrubs, hanging baskets, herbs - sights and smells to amaze.

Flowers don't seem to mind where they grow, at a 'store', at a park, in your garden, or even in the ditch in front of your house. But if you live in an apartment, or don't have a green thumb, you can always find a bit of joy and peace at Prickly Pear.

(Lupins are one of my favourite flowers. They used to grow rampart in front of my Newfoundland house, and they would almost cover the graveyard next door. What a beautiful tribute to the souls in rest!)
On the way back to work, I passed another favourite place, also known for its wonderful sights and smells.
Bell's Bake Shop, where the best Cupcakes in Steveston reside. The Red Velvet is a good choice, but then so is the Lemon, the Coconut, and ... well, just about all of them, to tell the truth. I have to very careful not to pass these doors very often, as I find it very difficult to just pass these doors.
Now, all I need is a purring Kitty at my side when I go to bed, and I'll know my five senses had a wonderful day!

JULY 7 - Saturday with Tanner, Curry-less Once Again, and A Few Drops

I do believe Summer is here to stay. Since I was expecting Tanner this afternoon, Breehy and I left in the morning to do some more traveling. Once again, our goal was lunch - something different that I hadn't had before.

So up the path to 128th, then up 96th. Not the way to Tim Hortons, but the other way, the uphill way, to a strip mall and a possibility or two. It was a beautiful ride (and partial walk - it's really uphill.) I've been to this area before, as it has my favourite Surrey bakery, fruit and veggie market, and Fish 'n' Chip place.

Aha! Found an East Indian restaurant - not closed, waiting for its Grand Opening, or moved. So I thought, a bit of a bike ride farther on, and a little bit of something curry on the way home. All is good.

I crossed the corner to continue my exploration, and saw this, and wondered how many eggs some people carry in their basket.

Yes, one stop does it all - get your passport photo taken, then pick up a video for tonight and a roast of goat for tomorrow`s dinner. There are so many Indian meat shops here, and I can`t get close to a ham for a good pot of Pea Soup. I don`t think you can make good pea soup with a goat bone. I don`t think I`ll ever try.

Just as I was getting back on Breehy, my phone rang, announcing the imminent arrival of Tanner, so I once again crossed the street and headed to the market for some fruit and veggies, and to the bakery for some bread. If I`m lucky, the Indian restaurant will be there next week.
Breehy had to stay outside. This is how I lock her up.
Locking her up like this wouldn`t work very well.

So, her basket loaded up with fresh and tasty, we hightailed it back home, wheeeeee-ing down all the hills to our driveway.

Tanner, Chris, Lizzie, Nikkie and I took the kids to Bear Creek Park for a picnic, and then Tanner and I spent some time at the playground and water park. I cooked myself in the sun, but he had a great time underneath all his sunscreen.
Water Park entrance
the whirly twirly thing
watch out!
Happy Tanner after a busy afternoon

For dinner, I made a really nice chicken chow mein - in fact it was so nice, we gobbled it up before I remembered I was going to share it with you in pictures. The house is relatively quiet now - the kids have settled down to a movie and popcorn, and when that`s over it will be really close to bedtime. Let`s hope one little man is as tired as his poor old Nanny.

Before I left this morning, knowing what a hot and tiring day I would have, I did this. I didn`t get very much in a few hours.

But I lowered it down anyway - Cheers, everyone!

Late for JULY 6 - Delta and Foraging for Food

I actually slept in today. I turned the sound off on the alarm clock so it wouldn't wake me up at the ungodly hour of 4:45am, but forgot to turn off the alarm on my phone. It beeped like crazy at 6am, and wouldn't shut up until I turned it off, then I went back to sleep, and didn't get up until almost 9 o'clock. And yes, I did regret it. I was just as tired as if I had jumped out of bed at 6, and felt like I had wasted some Day Off time.

Late in the morning, Breehy-hinny-brinny-hoohy-hah and I headed out for what we hoped would be an adventure, but alas, that didn't really happen. We biked to Walmart, where I spent my last few dollars on a Helmet (now it's Ramen noodles until Payday), then continued to Scott Road. My plan was to find a place to try something different for lunch.

One thing cool about Scott Road - if you cross it, you are in Delta. You could stand with one foot in Surrey and one foot in Delta, if you didn't mind standing in the middle of a really busy road and having cars whiz by you on both sides. I crossed into Delta, and started checking out food places there.

Nothing panned out. I crossed back into Surrey - nope. Crossed back to Delta and went farther afield. Nope. Nada. Well, there were eateries - Dairy Queen, Mcdonalds, Subway, Quiznos, Booster Juice, KFC, Taco Bell ... I could go on and on, but I'm starting to get hungry. I did find this and thought it was Shareworthy -
It's a bit hard to read: MANN BROS KNITWEAR STORE ..... MANN BROS VIDEO STORE....MANN BROS MEAT SHOP

Whoever the Mann Bros are, they are very industrious. Too bad they didn't also have an East Indian resaurant there or I might have got some Mann Bros Chicken Tikka..

Then I rode by a Chinese Dim Sum place, and thought, 'Okay, I'm going to try sum Dim Sum', not knowing what the heck it was, but then remembering someone saying Dim Sum is an experience for a lot of people, not just one -  click here to see Richmond Foodie Blogger Lindsay's experience with Dim Sun. I think it would be a bit too much for just me alone. So I passed that by. Then I saw a Pho place across the street so headed there - Pho is Vietnamese noodles, and both Marina and Steve have sung their praises. So off I pedal, and see a sign - GRAND OPENING JULY 13.

Never one to give up, I crossed into Surrey once again -
- to look for a place called Chick Chick House - couldn't find that, BUT across the street I saw another East Indian place that looked like a diner, nothing too fancy, so Breehy and I took off again. Only to find a sign - MOVED TO ... somewhere far far away.

So we rode home - lots of nice downhill, although I have to be careful with big downhills. Although I feel like just spreading my arms and legs in the air (sort of like the letter X or in my case XL,) I am a bit nervous in case Breehy loses something important if she reaches more than 5 KPH. So I use a very gentle front brake, as my back break is very squeaky and tends to stick.

And I made this, as I was starving by then - egg and cheese omelet on a toasted bun.
And that's about all she wrote!

REALLY late flog for JULY 5 - Goodbye Mr Ships ...

I did really well keeping a secret, especially since I'm a big Blabbermouth. However, it was easier for me since I could tell everyone on this side of the world, as long as they had no back-east connection. Now I can tell you all why I was too tired to write in my blog Thursday night.

After a 37-hour shift at work, where 3/4 of the stock had to pulled outdoors on the sidewalk to try and increase sales, I finally got home, in spite of a sloth-pulled bus and a packed sky train. Then it was a quick trip to Zellers - then home, to grab a bite to eat. Howard made burgers, but I couldn't eat one. I had a bag of chips instead. And a muffin.

Then the big blue truck sped (literally) to the airport with Steve at the wheel, Howard in the co-pilot's seat, and me in the back (seat, that is, not the truck bed) biting my nails and trying to keep my eyes off the speedometer.
Next, an old-fashioned check-in - thank goodness Air Canada still has real people to help the unseasoned traveler - and he's in the line to go through security to Gate 40. Even though he's holding a BC liquor store bag, there ain't no booze inside. Just a cryptogram puzzle book and a bag of Hershey Kisses. Hopefully enough to last him until he gets home.

Howard didn't go to work on Thursday, as he wanted to get ready for his trip. In the hour and a half interval of my getting home and us leaving for the airport, he:

  • bought a new belt - first one was too small, second one was too small, third one 'seemed' okay
  • got a noisy tool of some kind and put a hole in his too-long belt so it would keep his jeans up
  • got his suitcase from Steve's attic (well, Steve actually did a crab crawl up there to get it)
  • packed same suitcase
  • had me running around looking for this and that
Of course, as soon as I got in the door, and he, knowing for the past month he was going, asked
'Where is my coffee table book from Platinum?'
'Why didn't you ask me that before now?'
'Well, I think it's in your room.'

Now, I know what's in my room, and there's no boat books in there. But I did know they were in his room - and he should have known that too. So I got it for him.

Seasons may change, but some people never do.
This guy was at the airport too. I think he had trouble getting through security.

One good thing about today - it was pretty warm, a nice summery day, so when I finally got to bed, my feet weren't icy cold. I fell asleep watching a taped Coronation Street, and did the proverbial log thing.

JULY 4 - Kids, Breehy, and Gardens

I got up early this morning because I didn't want to waste any hours of my Day Off - and so far, I haven't. It's been a wonder-ful and awe-some day - in the fullest sense of the words.

I kidnapped two kids from their home this morning, as I wanted some more free labour for my garden. I don't think Steve will end up with a Vokey and Son/Daughter sign on the side of a landscaping truck, though.

Lizzie didn't want to help plant flowers as she 'got dirt on her hand.' Poor Lizzie. Chris didn't want to dig any farther when he saw a carpenter beetle and a spider. So it was get down and dirty for nanny, while the two squeamish little monkeys settled down to Treehouse on TV. However, I thought my little garden looked very nice when I finished -
 - that is, until later on in the afternoon when I had the pleasure of a different garden.

After the kids went home, I dusted off  Breehy-hinny-brinny-hoohy-hah and we went for a ride. Once again, she brought me downhill, and I pedalled her on the level and pushed her uphill. I think she got the better end of the stick. I didn't have a plan of action - but I was on the lookout for maybe a place to get an unusual bite to eat for lunch.

I headed up 134th to 97A (I think), and rode down past Dairy Queen, where I knew I would find a wooded pathway. On the edge of same pathway, I found thousands of unripe blackberries, so I know where I'm heading with my bucket in the near future.

And here's the path - Breehy and I had a blast going downhill (I don't think she realized her back brakes didn't work, but I was very careful with the front ones - I didn't want to sail through the air and land on top of a 40 foot tree.) Uphill was fine too, but while we were at the bottom of this little valley, I heard a gurgle, saw a mucky downhill path, and that's where I found this treasure

Pretty cool, eh?  Breehy wasn't very happy lying on the ground -

- but I wasn't very happy when I had to shove her up the slippery slope to the path. I was sure we were going to end up slipping and sliding back to the bottom again - but we didn't.

This path brought us to 140th Street, unfamiliar territory, but I bravely turned in the least uphill direction to do some more exploring. There was a bicycle lane at the side of the road, so all was good, and I pedalled until I came to a little corner shop -an Indian convenience store/take-out/laundromat/post office/video rental/gift place. And I said to myself, 'I could buy some Indian food here and see if I like it.'

So I locked Breehy to a post, and went in. First to the Diet Pepsi cooler, then to the counter.

'I'm not used to this food but I 'd like to try it. Someone not too spicy.'

She suggested samosas. I've already had samosas, and I'm not too fussy about them (although I didn't tell her that, as she probably made these,) so we decided on Tandoori Chicken and a veggie mix - green and red peppers, and onions. Back to Breehy with my little plate, and off we went looking for a spot to have a mini picnic.

Another downhill  coast and what should I find but Bear Creek Park, the perfect spot to have lunch. I rested Breehy by the table, and sat down bravely.
Looks good, right? And it wasn't bad. Maybe the fact that it had cooled off considerably (assuming it was hot when I got it) lessened its goodness. The veggies were very greasy, and the chicken, although cooked, wasn't cooked as much as it could have been. The Tandoori spices weren't hot at all, very mild - in fact, it could just as easily not been East Indian food, as far as I was concerned. Maybe a corner everything store wasn't the best place to begin my foray into another culture's cuisine.

Now, prepare to be awed. On the way out of the park, I noticed a sign for Bear Creek Gardens. I didn't know Bear Creek had Gardens, so thought I'd check it out - personally, I'm still in awe. A picture album follows, one that hardly does justice -

And this brings us to Domenic and Heather, who were working on the gardens when I went by.
I walked over, and being me, asked a question that in retrospect, I probably would have reworded.

'So, how lucky do you feel?'

I am really glad Domenic knew what I was talking about -  he said he felt really lucky, to be working in such a beautiful place. He has over 25 years in the landscaping business, and had actually planted some of the trees in the garden years ago. Now, he's been back since March, doing something he obviously loves doing, and doing it well.

I am pleased to say I never got lost at all this time, my butt never hurt from riding bike, and my mouth didn't burn from the Tandoori chicken. In fact, it wasn't until I got home and had a Yogurt that I tasted (felt?) the heat at all. Isn't that weird? No weirder than the yogurt tasted, though. All in all, a good day, a perfect day - and one of the reasons I got up early this morning. Sometimes it takes a few extra hours to pack a perfect day into 24 hours!

JULY 3 - Rain, Shadows, and .... that's about it, actually ...

Yes, it is July 3. We had a morning of pouring rain, and my poor little shoes and I were soaking wet by the time we got to work, in sore need of a Hot Chocolate. I know these are supposed to be Winter drinks, but Geez Louise, it sure doesn't seem like summer. Which is why I turned the heat on when I went in the store.

Three. That is the number of customers I had for the first 2 1/2 hours. That's how wet and cold it was - nobody wanted to leave their nice warm nests. Either that, or they were all out in their gardens planting geraniums and picking strawberries. However, they all decided to drop in late afternoon, which is the time of day I'm at my best. Not.

Me: 'Can I help you find anything? I close in 2 1/2 minutes'
My Shadow: 'You'd better find it and get the hell out of here before 5:30.'
Customer: 'No, I'm just browsing - although come to think of it, I think I would like 4 inches of each of these 23 rolls of ribbon, please.'
My Shadow: (at this point my shadow is censored)

However, my Shadow and I caught the bus just in time, and caught the skytrain just in time, because we ran up the thousand stairs when I heard the rumble of its arrival. Slower and younger people missed it, elevator people missed it - nyah nyah nyah on them. My heart stopped racing long after my legs did -by the time we got to King George station it was back to its normal Thump-Ba-Thump-Miss-a-Beat-and-Quiver. Come to think of it, maybe the same people who see me racing upstairs are the ones who won't offer me a seat when the train is packed.
  • Breakfast - Toast and Coffee
  • Lunch - Ham and Cheese Sandwich, Cream of Broccoli Soup
  • Dinner - Fried Potatoes w/Onions, Wieners
  • Snacks - Yogurt, 3 little tiny cookies, a few chips, Hot Chocolate

JULY 2 - Oliver!, Poetic Licence, and Me? Tired?

What does a hit song from the musical Oliver! have in common with my bus brain this morning?

Wheh eh eh eh ere is summer?
It's not here and that's a bummer
I know it's not in Texas, there's no doubt - cos they have rain instead of drought
Wheh eh eh eh ere is summer?

Wheh eh eh eh ere's the heat?
I don't have tan lines on my feet
There's no kids in the park, and we could sure use Noah's ark
Wheh eh eh eh ere is summer?

Wheh eh eh eh ere's the sun?
It left before its job was done
Well, this could make one cry, thirteen degrees in July
Wheh eh eh eh ere is summer?

Well, it's not close enough for copywright infringement, so I'm not in the least worried. The perfect verses sang themselves between my ears on the way to work, but when I actually got to work, there was only a bit of imperfection left. I don't think it's too bad, composed on about 4 hours of sleep, over a mile walk to the sky train, and standing on that same train for the twenty minutes it takes to get me to 22nd Street Station. Even though it was a sorta kinda holiday for a lot of people, I have never seen the train so crowded as it was this morning, and nobody would offer this old granny a seat. I've said it before (and I'll say it again) - if I was sitting on the train and saw me standing, I would offer me a seat.

Just heard the forecast for tomorrow - more rain, maybe a thunder shower, and wet and windy in the afternoon. Oh joy.

  • Breakfast - Big Breakfast from McDonalds (now that's a crappy dish) and Coffee
  • Lunch - Corn Chowder from Steveston Bakery. Lately their soup has been very spicy, I may have to reconsider My Favourite Place for soup, tiny piece of Chocolate Cake
  • Dinner - Hamburger and Fries, Diet Coke
  • Snacks - Banana
See? NO HOT CHOCOLATE!

JULY 1 - My New Number, Canada Day, and a Memory

163.5 - I know that's a horrible number. I feel I am sliding uphill at a fast pace, and if I'm not careful my skirts and jeans will no longer fit, and that wouldn't be good as I got rid of all the ones that would fit once these wouldn't fit any more. So I have to get back into soups and salads and get used to being hungry all the time and start walking and biking ..... but right now - all I want to do is sleep.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

To tell the truth, I didn't have a Happy Canada Day at all, and swear I'm not working on July 1 next year. I'm going to book it off as soon as I find a 2013 Calendar - I don't even care if it's a Playboy calendar, I'm buying it and booking the day off.

First of all, buses and skytrain were packed solid. I didn't have to leave too early, as I didn't have to open the store until noon, since there was a Canada Day Parade traveling the street in front of the store. However, I still had to make sure I would get there in time, as Sunday trains and buses don't go so often, and therefore there are longer wait times. I did manage to sit all the way to Steveston, but this year the last bus stop was more than two blocks away from Moncton, and one block away from the store - I swear, every year they stop farther and farther away. I didn't mind walking, but walking through throngs of people is another thing, as they were just 'marling' along.

For those of you who don't know what 'marling' is - I have a little memory to explain it for you.

Setting: Staff Room at Bishop White Elementary, way back in the dark ages. Second bell rings - oops, we were all supposed to be in our classrooms five minutes ago .... and somebody (Ada, I think) says,
'Guess we should marl up to our rooms.'
And Barry, a high school teacher, asks,
'Marl ... what does that mean, anyway?' which just shows that high school teachers don't know everything, in my opinion ... however, I reply ...
'You've seen us walk to our classrooms after the bell rings, right? Well, that's marling.'
He got it then.

Well, marling back then was fun - a few slow minutes of walking and chatting. But this morning it wasn't fun, as I just wanted to get to where I was going, and didn't even have room to pass the slow movers. If I had been driving, I would have blasted my way through with my horn, but I wasn't. I almost had an attack of Sidewalk Rage. However, a few sideway weaves and using the road when there were no vehicles using it got me to the store in time to see the last of the parade.

It wasn't very impressive, but this was  the very last of it. I probably missed the exciting parts while I was reading Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot on the bus.

The only good thing about working was the store was only open five hours, even though there were lots of people trying to get in before we opened and after we closed. I rushed to do the deposit and hightail it to the bus stop, only to wait almost half an hour for the bus, which usually runs every 8 -10 minutes. I was lucky enough to get a seat at the front, but unlucky enough to have a two seater stroller next to me, which held a toddler (or maybe two) who had just made a terrific present for its/their mother. That aroma even got past my stuffed up allergy tormented nose.

So home I finally got. And bed I'm soon going to.
  • Breakfast - Toast and Coffee
  • Lunch - 6" Chicken Flatbread from Subway, Cranberry Juice
  • Dinner - 2 Scrambled Eggs, a slice of Bread, Yogurt
  • Snacks - Hot Chocolate, a piece of Low Fat Omega 3 Cranberry Loaf - tastes a lot better than it sounds!
